DIBA

The first Bitcoin-native NFT marketplace: digital art and music minted, owned and settled directly on Bitcoin through RGB smart contracts. My job was to make a brand-new asset class feel obvious.

01 · Context

A new way to own digital art, directly on Bitcoin, needed an interface mainstream people could actually trust.

DIBA is the first Bitcoin-native NFT marketplace, built on RGB smart contracts and launched on mainnet at the Bitcoin 2023 conference. It lets people mint and own unique digital assets (art and music) settled directly on Bitcoin rather than a separate chain. The venture is backed by notable Bitcoin investors, including Tim Draper and Bill Tai.

I was the designer on DIBA at DIBA Global, owning the design process and the visual design. DIBA is a separate product from the Bitmask wallet: one company, two products, each with its own job and its own interface.

02 · The problem

The marketplace had one genuinely hard job:

  • A brand-new asset class. Unique digital assets on RGB, settled on Bitcoin, were something almost no one had seen. The interface had to make an unfamiliar idea feel obvious: value the user could feel without first learning the vocabulary (RGB, taproot, UDAs, Lightning).
  • Mainstream trust in a novel category. Collectors needed to browse, mint and own with confidence, in a category with no established mental model to lean on.

Put together: take something novel and high-stakes, and make it legible enough that a mainstream person would actually try it, and come back.

03 · My role
  • End-to-end design. Wireframes to prototypes to high-fidelity, building a distinct, brand-led interface for the marketplace.
  • The core flows. Browsing, discovering, minting and owning unique digital assets, designed so a new category feels approachable.
  • Iterate on real feedback. Continuously refined the designs against user feedback and usability testing.
  • One coherent identity. Partnered with the marketing team so the brand stayed consistent across product, site and campaign: every touchpoint reading as one thing.
04 · What the work taught me
Principle
Demystify, don't dumb down

Let people feel the value of a new asset class without first learning the jargon underneath it.

Principle
One brand, many surfaces

Product, site and campaign had to read as one thing: a design-system problem before a screen problem.

DIBA taught me to introduce people to something they have never seen before, and make it feel obvious. That is most of the job in AI products now.
05 · Outcome
Real, shipped, at scale

DIBA launched on Bitcoin mainnet, debuting at Bitcoin 2023 as the first RGB-powered NFT marketplace. The venture is backed by investors including Tim Draper and Bill Tai. Live product, real users, real money.

The marketplace is live at diba.io. Its sibling product, the Bitmask self-custodial wallet, has its own case study.
